Rationale
The purpose of this life skill is to help children become confident, capable, and comfortable in a kitchen environment — not just knowing where things are, but understanding how a kitchen actually works. Cooking Skills gives children practical exposure to food preparation while helping them develop independence, responsibility, and confidence through real, hands-on experience.
Rather than simply following instructions, campers experience the full process of turning raw ingredients and a recipe into a finished meal they can enjoy. This builds an understanding of cause and effect, sequencing, and problem-solving — all within a fun and supportive setting.
Just as importantly, children are encouraged to explore food with an open mind. Many discover that foods they previously thought they disliked aren’t so bad after all. Sometimes they’re right — and sometimes they surprise themselves. Either outcome is valuable, because the real lesson is learning to try.
WHAT YOUR CHILD WILL EXPERIENCE:
- Become genuinely comfortable navigating and working within a kitchen, understanding basic layout, tools, and safe practices — not just where the cupboards are.
- Take part in the complete cooking process, from preparing ingredients and following a recipe to creating something they are proud to eat.
- Develop confidence through practical responsibility, teamwork, and problem-solving.
- Be encouraged to try new foods in a supportive, fun environment, building curiosity, adaptability, and healthy attitudes toward food.
